Town of Hilo

Honestly we haven't been to every store in Hilo.  Each time is a new adventure with plenty of gift shops and places to eat.  Some of our favorites are Hulakai,  The Hawaiian Force, and Island Nation.

Sports Fishing Charter

We like to go to the Kona side for charter fishing, the water is a little more calm.  Most boats offer mornings, afternoons or full days.  Optional catch and release or have your fresh catch packed up to take home.

We have gone out with Captain Kenny Fogarty a couple of times, these were great experiences.  while waiting for the big fish to bite we enjoyed bottle nose dolphins, whales and fish stories.

Punalu'u Beach

(Black sand beach)

This is another must see.  The entire beach is black sand.  There are often green sea turtles lounging on the beach, be sure to keep 10' to 15' away, as they are endangered.

Our favorite Portuguese sweet bread, and other other goodies.  This bake shop is also the southern-most bakery in the US.  Check out their little gift shop for more souvenirs.

Papakolea Beach

(Green sand beach)

One of just a few in the world, this green sand beach is worth the hike.  If you are not up for the hike to the beach you can find locals for hire to shuttle you to and from, you will see them in their trucks in the parking area.  A good 4x4 can also make the drive.
